Grants - 2016 Awards
In 2016, the Terry Lee Wells Foundation awarded $820,522 in grants to 48 organizations in northern Nevada. The grant amounts ranged from $440 to $250,000. These grant recipients and purposes of the grants are:
Artown: to support the Monday Night Family
Series during Artown’s 2016 festival.
Arts for All Nevada: for the Arts for All Kids program,
which provides quality hands-on arts workshops for students with special needs
in Washoe County and Carson City School District classrooms.
Boys & Girls Club
of Elko: for
support of the No Child Turned Away program in Elko to provide access to
programs of the Boys & Girls Club of Elko that will enable all young people
in Elko to reach their potential.
Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows: for installation of a Playground at the Bresson Avenue site that will provide a safe place for at-risk children to go after school, weekends, holidays, and during the summer.
Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada: for support of the Summer Brain Gain program, a project-based learning approach designed to prevent learning loss and to build academic skills.
Capital Cities C.I.R.C.L.E.S. Initiative: to increase outreach to families in need in Carson City and support the Initiative designed to help families break the cycle of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency.
CARE Chest of Sierra Nevada: to support the Medical Equipment and Supplies and Medical Nutrition programs for low-income clients in northern and rural Nevada.
Carson City Symphony Association: to support the Strings in the
Schools after-school music program in Carson City schools.
Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada: to implement and fully staff a Nurses Clinic and Outreach Project within the CCNN Resource Network that will provide medical care and services for the most vulnerable members of our community who are living in extreme deprivation and have very little access to medical care.
Child Assault Prevention (CAP)
Elementary Abuse Prevention Workshops for 2nd, 4th and 6th grade students in Washoe, Storey, and Lyon Counties.
Communities in Schools of Nevada: for support of the dropout prevention program in five schools in Elko County and four schools in Washoe County.
Community Chest, Inc.: to support Phase Two of the Storey
County Youth and Community Resource Center.
Community Health Alliance: to initiate a Healthy Weight Program for children and their families in northern Nevada, which is designed to address overweight and obesity in children and teach healthy nutrition and activity choices for children and parents.
ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada: for expansion of the ESL Program to 250 new students in five counties of northern Nevada: Carson, Douglas, Washoe, Lyon, and Churchill.
Food Bank of Northern Nevada: to support operating expenses of the Food Bank, which is the primary resource providing food and services for low-income children, families, seniors, and individuals in need in northern Nevada.
Good Shepherd's Clothes Closet: for operating support that will assist the organization in providing free clothing to low income families and individuals as well as the homeless in the Reno-Sparks area.
House Calls: for operating support for programs
that provide seniors with services that meet their safety, security, and
Junior Achievement of Northern Nevada: to purchase a new server and support Program Kits and JA in a Day programs.
MEFIYI (Me-for-Incredible-Youth, Inc.): to support the REWARD of Sports program in the Carson Valley, which utilizes teens' love of sports to motivate them to participate at a higher level in academics, build better character, and become better citizens.
Nevada Diabetes Association: to fund the Terry Lee Wells Family Camp for children with diabetes and their families and the Terry Lee Wells Family Support Group for families dealing with a diabetic child.
Nevada Health Centers: for operational support
of the NVHC Mammovan Program and the Ronald McDonald Dental Care Mobile.
Nevada Women’s Fund: to award a Terry Lee Wells Endowed Scholarship
to a woman who is a resident of a rural area in northern Nevada, with
preference given to a re-entry student.
Empowerment Project: for support of the Community Living Program that provides at risk older female youth the necessary skills training, resources and accountability for self-sufficient and responsible living.
No Opportunity Wasted, Inc.: for support of the Education through Experience College Prep Program, which exposes students to college opportunities, choices, and resources and results in higher graduation rates and success in college.
Children’s Cancer Foundation: for the Family Assistance Fund, which provides financial
assistance to families of children diagnosed with cancer, for expenses incurred
during the child’s treatment and follow-up care.
Northern Nevada Arts Council: to provide funding to develop the organizational capacity and financial structures necessary to support the growth of arts and culture programs in Winnemucca and surrounding communities in Humboldt County.
Planned Parenthood Mar Monte: to provide funds for 193 low-income, under-served
women in northern Nevada to receive free medical services for hormonal birth control
without a mandatory pelvic exam.
Reno Little Theater: to sponsor Theater for Young Audiences tours to elementary schools in rural Nevada during the 2016-2017 school year.
Association: for the
RPA Kids program that provides after-school violin instruction to
underprivileged elementary school students.
Reno Pops Orchestra:for support of free community concerts during the 2016-2017 Season.
Ridge House: for support of the Women's Therapeutic Recreation Program, which provides a supportive environment for women in recovery from substance abuse and addiction to live a sober life through outdoor and other recreational activities.
Saint Francis of Assisi Food Pantry: for purchase of a large commercial freezer and for ongoing pantry operation costs that will provide healthy non-perishable and perishable food at no cost to low-income individuals and families in the Reno area.
Sierra Arts Foundation: for support of the Arts Alternatives Program, which offers arts education to underserved, disadvantaged, and adjudicated youth in Washoe County.
Sierra Nevada Ballet: to provide reduced price or free tickets and busing to allow at-risk, low-income students and seniors to attend performances of "PEANUTCRACKER - The Story in a Nutshell" in Carson City and at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.
Journeys: to provide a three-day and two-night outdoor science and art learning experience for special needs children.
Sierra Nevada MasterWorks Chorale: to provide free tickets to senior citizens to attend the Holiday Concert, outreach concerts at the major local hospitals, and outreach concerts at convalescent centers, retirement homes, and Alzheimer's facilities.
Sky Tavern: to support the 2017 Junior Ski
Program at Sky Tavern and enable participation for families who would otherwise
be excluded from snow sports.
Solace Tree: to support the Good Grief Program that provides free grief counseling services to children and teens living in and around northern Nevada.
Tahoe Youth & Family
operational costs of substance abuse counseling services in Douglas County.
Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery
Museum: challenge grant to raise funds for operations, improvements to existing exhibits, and future exhibits.
Northern Nevada: for expansion of Outreach Programming to provide drama classes for youth residing at Kid's Kottage and the Volunteers of America Family Shelter, and for children and youth at the Boys and Girls Club locations.
Think Kindness: to support the Kindness Crew program at underserved schools in Washoe County, a peer-to-peer leadership program designed to inspire measurable acts of kindness in schools and communities, resulting in a decrease in bullying, increase in positive culture perception, and a stronger sense of community.
Truckee Meadows Community College: to provide software and equipment for the Disability Resource Center at TMCC that will enhance services provided to students with disabilities.
Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation: to support the Student Stewards Consortium, a STEM, Common Core, and standards based program that uses citizen science to get economically underserved students excited about the natural world and their local parks.
University of Nevada,
Reno: to provide
scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need to attend the
NevadaFIT Academic Boot Camps.
Urban Roots: to fund facility improvements and additions that will ensure children and adults with physical disabilities will be able to participate in unique garden education programs and customized activities.
Washoe K-12 Education
support Parent University classes in the Washoe County School District during
the 2016-17 school year.
Women & Children's Center of the Sierra: to develop and implement the Children's Activities Program that will provide fun learning opportunities for children while their mothers attend classes at WACCS.
